You may wonder about the meaning of the phrase “born again” every time you come across it. What does it really mean? How does being born again help me? What does being born again save me from? Why should I be born again if I already live in a good and decent manner?
These questions and several others perhaps come to mind when you think about being born again. In a very uncomplicated manner, we will take a look at the message of Salvation; from the Bible.
Our need for a Savior and Salvation
In the book of Romans (in the Bible), God’s Word says:
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; – Romans 3:23
The source of man’s problems can be traced down to sin. Sin draws man away from God and produces a response in him that is contrary to the will of God. Murder, envy, lies, anger and all manner of vices of man are rooted in sin. Therefore, if the nature of sin is removed, these vices are removed as well. National laws are put in place by governments to prevent total collapse of civil society but the truth is that these laws can be bypassed or broken and more importantly, they do not deal with the real issue; sin.
The problem with Sin
In the scripture above, we come to understand that in the eyes of God, all men have sinned. We also understand from scriptures that there is a price for sin and that price is death.
The soul that sinneth, it shall die… – Ezekiel 18:20
God in His justice is bound to repay the act of sin with the price of death. And because all men have sinned, all men are bound for eternal death and damnation. This is the main problem with sin. God is bound to repay the sins of man (all mankind), who He loves with death.
It is important to mention that death in the context of its original meaning is not just the loss of physical life. Death as defined by scripture is eternal separation from God. If God is life, death is separation from God.
The Solution
Many people ask why God placed the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden. Some also go on to assume that perhaps God intentionally set man up to sin. However, this not true. It’s not true because the entire story of the bible is God’s attempt to reconnect back to man after he sinned. He tried to do so through Noah and Abraham and then through the Law of Moses. When all these didn’t work, He sent Jesus Christ.
When God gave the law of Moses, He required that all men atone for their sins by sacrificing a lamb at the altar of God. This sacrifice; the death of a lamb, was a substitution. The lamb was put to death instead of them. The bible talks about this in Hebrews:
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. – Hebrews 9:22
The only way for the sins of man to be cleansed is through the shedding of blood. However, the system through the Law of Moses was not perfect because it was done through the blood of bulls and rams and sheep. The perfect sacrifice would have to be through the blood of a man; a man without sin.
This is the reason why Jesus Christ came, died for our sins and shed His blood. The penalty for our sins was paid by Him so we would no longer be under the wrath of God. By the sacrifice of Jesus, the sin of man was paid for once and for all. If death was passed into all men through the sin of Adam, then we can receive life through the death of Jesus Christ. The bible explains this in Romans 5:
For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. – Romans 5:17
How to be saved from sin; to be Born Again
Simply put, being born again means accepting the price Jesus paid to connect us back to God. If we understand the problem, the consequences of the problem, God’s solution and how to accept God’s solution, we will be saved.
To be saved; in order to be born again, we must
- Believe in our heart that Jesus Christ came to die for us so we can be saved.
- Confess with our mouth what we believe in our hearts
In the book of Romans, this is clearly explained. Let’s take a look at it:
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation…For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. – Romans 10:10-13
It is really quite amazing how simple it is to be saved, especially considering all that went into making it available to us.
The moment of Truth
This entire message has led up to this point. Salvation is a decision; a decision to accept what Jesus Christ has done for you or not. It has all been done. The hard part is completed. It is now up to you.
If you would like to give your life to Jesus Christ and be Born Again, saved from sin and its consequence, I implore you to call on God right now. Ask him to forgive you of all your sins and save you.
Please say this prayer out loud:
Lord Jesus, thank you for dying for me. Thank you for paying for my sins. Thank you for doing what nobody else could do for me. I believe you were sent by God to die for me and confess that I accept the sacrifice you made for all my sins; past and future. I believe you died and rose up on the third day from the grave and confess you as my savior and Lord. Save me and make me a child of God, in Jesus name, Amen.
If you said that prayer, you are now saved. You are born again and you are a child of God. In John 1, the bible says:
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: – John 1:12
