Following the Leadership of The Holy Spirit – 1

Following the Leadership of the Holy Spirit: Part 1
Understanding how to follow the leadership or leading of the Holy Spirit is an issue many Christians desire to understand in greater detail.

Why we need to follow the Holy Spirit

There are a number of reasons why it is extremely important for believers to understand how the Holy Spirit leads. One reason is because our fellowship with the blessed Third person of the Godhead is our ticket into the world of the supernatural, the miraculous and into a realm of abundance that defies even the harshest conditions of life.

The bible makes a very daring statement regarding the sons of God.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. – Romans 8:14

As many as are led by the Spirit of God

If we take a critical look at the scripture in Romans 8:14, we come to understand a great truth regarding the family of God. It is that only those who are led by the Spirit of God are the Sons of God. To quote the scripture differently, only those who follow the Spirit of God are the sons of God. In essence, this means that our ability to follow the Holy Spirit, our sensitivity to his leading and how well we understand how he leads us is the primary factor that determines whether we are Sons of God or not.

The scriptures also make it clear that there is a difference between a “Child” of God and a “Son” of God (note that the term “Son” in this case is not gender specific). The difference between both is their level of spiritual maturity.

He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name: – John 1:11-12

We see from this scripture that those that receive him are given the power to become the sons of God. That power comes through the Holy Spirit, who is the source of all power.

So, it is impossible to become a Son of God without first receiving Jesus Christ and without following the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Consequently, we can appreciate the importance of the Holy Spirit’s leading and our need to understand how he leads so we can follow him.

Having established why we need to follow the Holy Spirit, we will go on to look at the major way He leads his people. Let’s take a look at the Holy Spirit’s leading through the Inward Witness in the second part of this message series.
