Together, we will create schools, and give proof that teachers can be honestly rewarded right here on earth. Together, we will build roads and bridges, and put in place creative institutions that will keep them safe and new. Together we will strive to give the poor a fighting chance at not only survival – but prosperity and growth. Together we will explore new ways to relate with our brothers on this continent and in other lands. We can be heroes – for with every thought and action, we co-creatively re-enact the Nigerian Dream.
In the coming moments, we must recognize that now is the time for reconciliation – enough blood has been shed, enough blame has been passed around, enough fingers have been pointed about. We must now find the grace to point our fingers at ourselves as we learn to forgive the mistakes of the past, the crimes done to your children and my children, as we begin anew to dance to the tunes of our forbears and the melodies of our descendants.
Let us transcend the bickering of combative politics, and listen to each other – pledging allegiance to the noble steeds and the golden eagle. Our coming adventure is a time to listen, to talk with each other – a new beginning in relationships and real changes.
I will be your President, not your ruler. I will walk the streets, and listen to you – mostly when we disagree. I will uphold the integrity of your trust, and affirm you as partners in the quest to recreate the Nigeria of our dreams. Nigerians recognize that government cannot do everything. However, they do expect that we can do just a little more – a little more to show that we care, a little more to make the streets safe, a little more to help evolve a healthy banking system, a little more to facilitate a platform for the lives we desire to lead. My administration will work to help build such a country that cares for its citizens, its histories and its future. We will be vulnerable to listen, and strong enough to act. We will not do all – we were never meant to. But we will support you as you do your own little – for in that ‘little’ are the precious seeds that will sprout trees of beauty and nourishment for generations to come.
Our time is now. In the spirit of our fathers, wear your tribal marks with pride, find your discarded flags, and embrace each other in preparation for a feast. The walls are being rebuilt every day when you obey the traffic lights, every day you deal with the other well and help a stranger, every day you sit with your child’s homework from school. Ours is not a common creed, but a common hope, a common fund, a commonwealth of faith that if we find ourselves, we shall find our promise.
This is our moment. This is our dream – a constant courageous celebration of our differences and cultures, a dancing circle around a fire, a symbol of the great spirits of Africa.

We will march and we will dance on the mountains. We will regain our place in the pride of nations. We will reawaken our folklores, and tell again the stories our parents could not tell us. We will build bridges where there were once walls, and convert our landscapes to monuments of our unity. When our children are old, and have children of their own, they will remember this night we stood by a mountain, and reclaimed the treasures of old. They will sing about a generation that found the courage to stand for what they believed in. And in a solemn moment of inexpressible gratitude, they will stand to their feet – and place their hands on their chests – people of every tribe and creed – one nation bound in freedom, peace and unity! Tonight is your night – and so shall every other night!
