How long will we continue like this?

Posted by davidluiz in Headline, Political

officer snap-shooting military

It’s over two years now since the new administration was installed in Nigeria, and in my opinion it’s as though we have not moved a step forward since May 29, 2007. Few days ago, the labor unions of the different organizations in the nation decided to make moves for industrial actions on the platforms of the organizations which they represent. Even the Post Office was out!

The circumstances that lead to the actions of the labour union of the country’s energy company, the union was protesting for the right for an increase in staff payment that had been approved by the Federal Government since February but has not been effected. The situation in the education sector is not entirely different, as the staff union of the apex educational bodies in the country are protesting that this increase is implemented as approved.

Now before we go too far, why is the challenge implementation of the increase in pay, if it has really been approved? If it has been approved, where is the money that has been paid since the approval?

These are some of the questions that bug my mind as I think about the complex issues that impede the growth and development of my country. In the past few day, industrial actions has crippled the operations almost all the sector of the nation’s economy.

The ultimate solution to the action in the power sector was for the government to take the union to court, asking the court to settle the issue and asking staff to come back to work, I guess because of the imminent danger of having that sector take a long leave from work. This government “brilliant” solution takes we back to the initial questions I ask, and I want to ask some more, but I thought the increase in pay was already approved? Why bring the court in, and move for a court settlement session, when you could settle out of court, by simply paying the rise approved by the government – a 150%  increase, unless that can’t be done because it reduces the profit they’ll make out of putting that pay in fixed deposit. So at wit end, treat and intimidation is necessary.

This is the Nigerian Democracy, so much about the government for the people, by the people and all the other people’s components. This is the way the government will deal with the actions of the management of a government owned organization, that has flagrantly refuse to carry out a government approved order; connive with the organization’s management to ensure that the staff return to work without receiving what duly belongs to them, by taking their representatives to the court, which is a “government” court as we have it in Nigeria.

It becomes more interesting, as an allegation stating that the education minister celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary with a 120-million Naira bash as an industrial action rocks that apex bodies in that sector too, whether it’s true or not the fact that there is an allegation makes the credibility of that minister questionable, what is he doing having a bash when his sector is in crisis.

This kind of situation is what calls for a state of emergency, unless the people in government are satisfied with this kind of kangaroo democracy, and have clipped the wings of the military officers that could drive a state of emergency, that is directed toward ensuring that the proper people are installed as leaders. This certainly will not be the case if the military officers are to temporarily take over as it were, because their antecedent is not one that can be trusted. Instead of providing stability as they should in times of crisis, they also want to get their share of power and money of the government treasury, so none can really be trusted.

This is where we find ourselves today, a nation with much more crisis than we can ever imagine the trouble in the Niger-Delta, leading to the bombing of the NNPC depot in Lagos, hence gradually moving to the West, through the deep sea connection of these two regions. Where are we going to as a nation is the big question I ask myself and I ask you too, where do you think this nation is heading to, with leaders who try the best to run as far as possible from the responsibilities that they were elected to handle, that’s if they were actually elected, what will be of the future of this nation?

This is the beginning of a series on orientation for national development, I hope by divine help, to be able to discuss intelligibly with you major issues that are presently on ground – as it relates to governance and responsibility for growth and development, matters that stand in the way of our growth and development as a nation and how we can as citizens create an awareness for a move towards CHANGE, real growth and development that will give light and hope to our future generation, and the generations to come. God bless Nigeria!
